Recent changes in cropland area and productivity indicate unsustainable cropland expansion in Malawi

چکیده

Abstract Cropland expansion is a common strategy for boosting agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) even though it often leads to economic, environmental, and social trade-offs. Ensuring sustainable cropland use their management critical improving food security preserving ecosystem services. To develop policies approaches that support at national sub-national scales, there need understand the spatial distribution of (/loss), any resultant changes productivity. This especially important SSA countries such as Malawi, where spatially explicit assessments area productivity are lacking. address this gap we used multi-source satellite data socio-economic data, combined with image classification trend analysis, firstly quantify productivity, secondly evaluate potentially available future expansion. We found evidence unsustainable which was demonstrated by: (a) rapid between 2010 2019 (increase 8.5% land area), characterized by an crop farming into upland areas indicate increased scarcity Malawi; (b) limited potential expansion, approximately only 5% total remained (corresponding 4671 000 ha); (c) overall reduction prevalence increase soil erosion. Our findings underscore urgent taking measures promote use, including protecting current from further degradation (e.g. Southern Malawi) planning Northern Malawi).

Cropland expansion changes deforestation dynamics in the southern Brazilian Amazon.

Intensive mechanized agriculture in the Brazilian Amazon grew by >3.6 million hectares (ha) during 2001-2004. Whether this cropland expansion resulted from intensified use of land previously cleared for cattle ranching or new deforestation has not been quantified and has major implications for future deforestation dynamics, carbon fluxes, forest fragmentation, and other ecosystem services. We c...

Biofuels, cropland expansion, and the extensive margin

Background: Recently, several papers have assessed land use consequences of biofuel expansion. In the absence of empirical evidence, these papers assigned subjective values to extensive margin (productivity of new croplands over productivity of existing croplands). Methods: This paper fills the gap in this area and provides a new data set which estimates land productivity at 0.5° × 0.5° (longit...

Watershed responses to Amazon soya bean cropland expansion and intensification.

The expansion and intensification of soya bean agriculture in southeastern Amazonia can alter watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry by changing the land cover, water balance and nutrient inputs. Several new insights on the responses of watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry to deforestation in Mato Grosso have emerged from recent intensive field campaigns in this region. Because of reduced e...

Cropland Capture - A Game for Improving Global Cropland Maps

Current satellite-derived global land-cover products, which are crucial for many modelling and monitoring applications, show large disagreements when compared with each another. To help improve global land cover (in particular the cropland class), we developed a game called Cropland Capture. This is a simple cross-platform game for collecting image classifications that will be used to develop a...
